Churah- A piece of Heaven in Chamba

Churah is indeed a hidden piece of heaven in the hills of Chamba in Himachal Pradesh. Its headquarters lie in Bhanjraru, another beautiful small town with its unique ambiance. The UT of Jammu and Kashmir also lies along the ridge with Bhadrwah district of Jammu region touching its boundaries. It is this natural that the region has an influence of the culture of adjoining state which gets prominently highlighted as you move remotely into the hinterlands.

Exceptional Scenic Beauty

The exceptional scenic beauty of Churah is so alluring that once you have been here, you will definitely want to come again. There are many religious and historic places in Churah that visitors keep flocking here, all the year round.

The roads are tough though and at places you will find only basic amenities. But then, this is the fun of being in tandem with nature and once you develop this feeling, remote locations will always interest you.

The valley has lush green cover of deodar and you will find spruce and fir trees also on the heights.

Land of Temples and Lakes

Churah has numerous attractions of these the temple of Devikothi not only attracts religious devotees but people who are interested in exploring its architecture. It’s gorgeous murals and intricate wood work give it a distinct impression. This temple was constructed by Raja Umed Singh  in 1754. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and many paintings of Goddess exhibiting her triumph over demons can be seen in the temple.

Churah is also known for its magical lakes. One of these and the most popular ones is the Gadasru Mahdev. This is a circular lake and occupies an area of half mile. The first view of the lake will definitely leave you spellbound, if and when you decide to visit the same. A temple dedicated to goddess Durga also stands besides the lake, as if offering protection to the devotees who come here often.

However, only the tough hearted can make it to the lake as the trek is quite rigorous and only if you fall among the category of seasoned trekkers, should you try this climb.

Another lake that will soothe your senses is Mahakali. This lake is situated at a height of 4080 meters in remote corner of Churah. Lush meadows and surreal location makes this a must visit place for avid travellers and trekkers.  When you come to this region, do keep ample time by your side as you can make a trip to Salooni which offers panoramic views of snow capped mountains.

If you can go an extra mile, head to Bandal valley which is the border of Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir. More than the location, the culture of this region will inspire you as you will witness a confluence of cultures here.

Chamba has a rich tradition in every aspect and it is time that one heads beyond the tourist destinations of Dalhousie and Khajjiar to witness a raw and less explored region of this Himalayan district in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
